Michael Dingake was one of the first Batswana to become a member of the Botswana National Party in 1967. But the basis of his political background is in the liberation politics of South Africa, where he was incarcerated on Robben Island for 15 years together with Nelson Mandela.

In 1986 he came back to Botswana and in 1992 was invited to help modernize the BNF administrative procedures. From 1993 to 1998 he was Vice President of the BNF.

After the Palapye debacle during the Special Congress scheduled to amend the Party constitution, he resigned first from the Vice Presidency and a few months later from the party itself. He was elected President of the splinter group, the Botswana Congress Party(BCP), in 1998. He retired from politics in 2001.

Michael Dingake highlights certain events in the history of the main opposition party BNF during the period 1984-1998, and attempts to shed some light on the nature of Botswana politics, the character of leadership nurtured by a community whose tradition is to worship leaders, and the general standard of politics prevailing in Botswana.

The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has been in power since Independence in 1966. This uninterrupted one-party rule for a nation internationally reputed to be a shining example of democracy cries for immediate answers. Does the ruling party’s policies and programmes consistently reflect the true aspirations of Batswana? If not, does the fault lie with an electorate that does not know how to articulate their own aspirations? Or does the fault lie with the opposition failing to offer alternative policies?

Michael Dingake writes with passion and in a pungent style. He is also the author of My Fight Against Apartheid, which was published in 1987 and which described hisincarceration with Nelson Mandela on Robben Island.
