This text is based on lecture notes for an introductory abstract algebra course taught at under graduate level at the the University of Botswana. However, it contains more material than would normally be covered in one course. The main objective is to provide the student with a knowledge of basic algebraic structures, groups and rings, and to prepare students for higher level mathematics.
The book demands very little in the way of prerequisites. An elementary knowledge of complex numbers and matrices is, however, assumed in some sections.
The text includes a wide variety of exercises and many worked examples that are intended to help in understanding new concepts. Definitions or new ideas which would otherwise seem complex are, in most cases, motivated through concrete examples. The emphasis is on clarity of exposition with the objective of producing a book that an average student can read with minimal assistance.
