Introductory Concepts of Mathematics is written for non-calculus mathematics courses for post secondary school students. The text presents a solid foundation in mathematics to students studying most disciplines at Universities, Colleges, Polytechnics or Technikons. The only mathematical requirement for this text is O-level mathematics, matriculation or a similar level of study.
The topics chosen are not only useful for students pursuing the sciences and engineering, they are also useful for students of business, economics and the social sciences. Sections can be selected to suit any one of these areas. The book can be used on different levels and can easily be adjusted to suit the specific needs of the students using it. The instructor can adjust the level of difficulty by increasing or decreasing the assignment of exercises, by eliminating some topics, and by varying the amount of time devoted to each exercise. The third edition has been enriched with more questions in the exercises. Solutions to selected questions are also given.
Professor Lungu completed his Honours degree at the University of Zambia and thenwent on to complete his Masters and Doctoral degrees at the University of Bristol, U.K. His current areas of specialisation are mathematical modelling and stochastic analysis. Dr. Cowen completed his Honours, Masters and Doctoral degrees at the University of Warwick, U.K. His area of specialisation is ergodic theory. Professor Lungu is currently professor of applied mathematics at the University of Botswana, while Dr Cowen is teaching in the United Kingdom.
